  21.                      {Enter THALIARD.}

  23.           THALIARD:  So, this is Tyre, and this the court.  Here must I
  24.                      kill King Pericles; and if I do it not, I am sure to
  25.                      be hanged at home:  'tis dangerous.  Well, I perceive
  26.                      he was a wise fellow, and had good discretion, that,
  27.                      being bid to ask what he would of the king, desired
  28.                      he might know none of his secrets:  now do I see he
  29.                      had some reason for't; for if a king bid a man be a
  30.                      villain, he's bound by the indenture of his oath to
  31.                      be one!  Hush!  here come the lords of Tyre.

  33.                      {Enter HELICANUS and ESCANES, with other Lords of
  34.                       Tyre.}
  35.  
  36.          HELICANUS:  You shall not need, my fellow peers of Tyre,            10
  37.                      Further to question me of your king's departure:
  38.                      His seal'd commission, left in trust with me,
  39.                      Doth speak sufficiently he's gone to travel.
  40.  
  41.           THALIARD:  [Aside]  How!  the king gone!
  42.  
  43.          HELICANUS:  If further yet you will be satisfied,
  44.                      Why, as it were unlicensed of your loves,
  45.                      He would depart, I'll give some light unto you.
  46.                      Being at Antioch--
  47.  
  48.           THALIARD:  [Aside]          What from Antioch?
  49.  
  50.          HELICANUS:  Royal Antiochus--on what cause I know not--
  51.                      Took some displeasure at him; at least he judged so:    20
  52.                      And doubting lest that he had err'd or sinn'd,
  53.                      To show his sorrow, he'ld correct himself;
  54.                      So puts himself unto the shipman's toil,
  55.                      With whom each minute threatens life or death.
  56.  
  57.           THALIARD:  [Aside]  Well, I perceive
  58.                      I shall not be hang'd now, although I would;
  59.                      But since he's gone, the king's seas must please:
  60.                      He 'scaped the land, to perish at the sea.
  61.                      I'll present myself.  Peace to the lords of Tyre!

  63.          HELICANUS:  Lord Thaliard from Antiochus is welcome.                30

  65.           THALIARD:  From him I come
  66.                      With message unto princely Pericles;
  67.                      But since my landing I have understood
  68.                      Your lord has betook himself to unknown travels,
  69.                      My message must return from whence it came.

  71.          HELICANUS:  We have no reason to desire it,
  72.                      Commended to our master, not to us:
  73.                      Yet, ere you shall depart, this we desire,
  74.                      As friends to Antioch, we may feast in Tyre.
